Understanding our Dune Ecosystems

  • Lake Michigan Family Camp 5807 Ridge Road Pentwater, MI, 49449 United States (map)

Our Lake Michigan shoreline is home to the largest freshwater dune system on earth. The dunes in Oceana County are widely appreciated for their beauty, and the diverse opportunities they provide for recreation. Join us on the dunes at Lake Michigan Family Camp to engage more deeply with our dune ecosystems. Our guest speakers, Zach Chamberlin and Kristen Fischer from the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE) will present on how the dunes form and reform over time, which natural communities thrive on dunes, what it means to be on a critical dune area and how we can live in this ever changing landscape. After the presentation we will venture out onto the dune to experience our coastal dune ecosystems first hand, and learn how we can support thriving dune communities.
