Join Oceana Conservation District and Michigan Natural Features Inventory for an in-depth field training experience to learn how to identify species found in and around vernal pools and practice the Michigan Vernal Pool Patrol monitoring protocol. Gain confidence in your ability to map and monitor vernal pools on your own!
Attendees must have attended the Michigan Vernal Pool Virtual Training Series before participating in the field training. The VPP team offers a 3-part series each year - if you did not attend live, you can complete the training on your own time and officially register for the VPP program. Please visit the Vernal Pool Patrol website to learn more.
The day will begin at 10AM at Oceana Conservation District. Please arrive a few minutes early to check-in and use the restroom. We will have a brief introduction and then carpool to Doolittle County Park where we will monitor a vernal pool and begin our exploration! After we monitor, we will return to Oceana Conservation District for lunch, discuss the Survey123 field app, and walkthrough the data entry process. We will wrap-up around 3:30PM. Event and location details will be shared in a follow-up email to registered participants.
Please bring: lunch and snacks, water bottle, knee-high boots or waterproof shoes, layers for warmth, rain gear, data collection device (i.e. cell phone with Survey123 installed or hard copy paper monitoring forms). All monitoring supplies will be provided.
